This page sets out what the IP lookup at ipapi.mimso.co.uk collects, why, and how to have it removed. It is written in plain English so you can actually read it.
What we collect
- When you look up an address, your IP is read from the request so we can geo-tag responses and rate-limit obvious abuse. Individual lookups are not written to disk.
- If you accept the location prompt, your browser sends your latitude and longitude one time. We immediately convert it to a town or city name and store only that, along with your IP, the country code, a visit count, and the first and most recent contribution timestamps. The raw coordinates are never written down.
- We use one entry in your browser's
localStorageto remember that you've answered the prompt, so you aren't asked again on every visit.
What we don't collect
- No analytics, no cookies, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts beyond the Tailwind CDN, Google Fonts and the flag image CDN that serve this page.
- No exact coordinates are stored after the reverse geocode runs.
- No account, no email address, no name.
Why
Geolocation from IP alone is often wrong, especially for residential ranges where the upstream defaults to a regional centroid. A handful of confirmed real locations from real people in those ranges noticeably improves accuracy.
Who else sees your data
- To turn coordinates into a town name we send the latitude and longitude to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Your IP address is not sent to them. They get a pair of numbers, nothing else.
- We do not sell, share, or rent any of this data.
How long we keep it
Contributed location records are kept until you ask us to remove them, or until we notice the IP has not contributed for a long time and prune it (no fixed schedule yet).
How to remove your contribution
The easiest way is from a browser connected to the same IP whose record you want gone. Use the button below.
Remove the contributed town/city associated with your current IP.
If you can't access this site from that IP (e.g. you've moved network), email [email protected] with the IP address and we'll remove it manually. No proof of ownership required, since the data was opt-in and contains nothing sensitive.
Children
This service is not aimed at anyone under 13. We don't knowingly collect anything about anyone under 13. The location prompt should not be accepted on a device used by a child.
Changes
If we change anything material on this page, the "Last updated" date at the top will change with it. We do not maintain a changelog of trivial edits.
